A few years ago I was at a gathering and was speaking to the Executive Director of a small non-profit that did some great work. He told me that he needed to have $125,000 in the next few months or the organization was going to close its doors. I found this very disconcerting and asked him what his plan to get the money was. He said he was going to go to his donor base and email everyone for additional funds. The Chairman of the Board was standing there and asked my opinion. I suggested that this was probably not going to get him the money he needed, as his donor base had just contributed to a recent drive. They both indicated that they had a very supportive base and he didn't really know what else he could do. Did I have any ideas?
 
This was my cue to make some suggestions that included getting his largest supporter, a hospital, to lead the way with a significant addition to their already generous support. In addition, the supporter should use his influence in a very specific and easy way to challenge and encourage other leaders to join him with financial support. I gave suggestions that correlated with the first idea and outlined a plan that had a better chance of leading to success.
 
As it turned out, the event, put together on short notice, was a huge success and not only kept the organization open, but extended its donor base and gave further opportunities to increase their overall funding beyond the current crisis. While it may not have worked as well as it did, I felt like the possibilities were far greater for success than going back to a list of small donors that had just contributed. After all, at that point, what was there to lose? I'm thankful that they're still serving a community that needs their help.
